Scuba News - Calling all divers!

CLUB MEETING!
Calling all divers! - Burger Night with Nick! This Tuesday night at 7pm, Eco Dive Club will be joined by SCUBA diving legend Nick Icorn. Nick was at the first SCUBA instructor's class at Scripps Institute in 1953. Since then he has played instrumental roles in the formation and growth of the LA County Underwater Instructors Program, NAUI, SSI, YMCA, and PADI.
He was a design engineer for early companies like US Divers and Ocean Dynamics. Currently he is the Director of the National Underwater Museum. Nick will be speaking to the Eco Divers about the "Evolution of Diving." He'll talk about helmets and diving bells to today's SCUBA. He'll talk about diving in the military dating back to the Civil War. He'll share what it was like to be in the first SCUBA class and give you a glimpse of what it was like to be there when our sport began.

new scuba Omega FIN! The Next Step in SCUBA Fin Technology: Omega’s The Amphibian - Eco Dive Center is constantly on the lookout for the greatest SCUBA products to complete our line. Our store is stocked with innovative designs from the leading manufacturers – but we are always willing to reach out and bring you the next big thing… or fin, as it may be. Eco Dive Center will now be carrying Omega’s Amphibian fin. The Amphibian is a revolutionary design that makes moving in fins, entries and exits, and the rest of your diving easier and more fun. When getting geared up – whether at the beach or on a boat – the fin blade folds up against your shin. You can walk around unencumbered by the fins with no fear of falling and no need to do an entry with your fins in your hands. As you make your first kicks, the blades unfold and lock in place and you have a great fin with good thrust and comfort. When your dive is over, a simple motion with your foot and the blades fold back up. You can walk up the ladder or out of the water with your fins still on.

  • No more fins lost to the big waves that knock them out of your hands.
  • No more bruised shins from kicking the ladders in the great fin release struggle.
  • No more tripping on the boat deck.
  • No more drifting from the boat trying to take off your fins at the ladder.

This might just be the end of the figure four and awkwardly leaning on your dive buddy in full gear. Come by Eco Dive Center and try out the American-made Omega Amphibian fins for yourself! For a demonstration of the Amphibian Fins, check out: click... COOL YouTube VIDEO!

new scuba Certification Course! "Cali Beach Diver" Conquer the Beach in 2008 - Most people would agree that Southern California features amazing SCUBA diving opportunities, and beach diving is a popular option for diving year round. Beach diving is a low-cost alternative that will get you in the water, allow you to gain experience, and open your eyes to the diversity of the underwater world. Southern California beach diving sites are varied and vibrant, featuring rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and kelp forests. Beach diving can be found at all levels from beginner to advanced, from shallow to deep. Then why don’t you do more of it? Many divers aren’t introduced to the tips and tricks that make shore diving easy and fun; rather they are left to fend for themselves. Brian Davis, an instructor at Eco Dive Center and the president of the Eco Divers Dive Club, saw that many of his diving friends weren’t comfortable enough with beach diving and did something about it! This winter and spring, Eco Dive Center will be again offering the "Conquer the Beach" program, an introduction to local shore diving. Brian’s been working on a Distinctive Specialty Course with PADI and is looking forward to certifying you as a Southern California Beach Diver. Classes begin in February, and you can get more information by calling the dive shop. Not on website yet.

AWARE
Eco Dive Center Receives Recognition from Project AWARE -Since the beginning, Eco Dive Center has been committed to environmental education and action. This was recognized by Project AWARE, issuing Eco Dive Center the 2007 Environmental Achievement Award for "dedication to environmentally-responsible business practices and commitment to the conservation of the underwater environment."
The team at Eco Dive Center has integrated this philosophy into everything we do. You might notice the comprehensive recycling program at the shop, or seen one of the many speakers who come to the Eco Dive Club meetings. You might not know that Eco Dive Center is a sponsor and supporter of a number of local environmental organizations including Heal the Bay and the Santa Monica Bay Keeper, or that Eco Dive Center is making the transition to solar power.

Eco Dive Center encourages divers to get involved in protecting and preserving our underwater world by organizing quarterly beach clean-ups and sponsoring the Annual Coastal Clean-Up Dive at the Santa Monica Pier. Instructors help student divers understand our daily impact on the oceans and simple steps divers can take to make a difference. Project AWARE provides many valuable tools that Eco Dive Center has integrated into its full spectrum of scuba training programs.
