Managed the CSULB Marine Lab for 5.5 years: collected live animals for classrooms, supported marine bio research, earned M.S. Biology concurrently
Master's Thesis investigated the movement patterns and habitat utilization of rockfishes from offshore oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel.
Currently working at SCE as Senior Marine Biologist, provide subject matter consultation on marine biological issues, permitting and compliance for San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
About the talk/reef:
In 1989 the California Coastal Commission determined that Southern California Edison's San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) was adversely impacting the marine environment and must therefore mitigate for the losses of marine life. Two major projects were to compensate for any impacts caused by SONGS for the operating life of the plant--restoration of 150 acres of coastal wetland habitat and construction of a 150-acre artificial reef offshore of San Clemente. The newly constructed Wheeler North Artificial Kelp Reef was completed in 2009 and is flourishing.

Kurt Lieber - of Ocean Defenders Alliance |

Kurt Lieber started scuba diving in Cleveland, Ohio, back in 1974. He moved to Orange County in 1979 to be near the ocean.
Kurt has been involved as a volunteer with several ocean related organizations for the past 3 decades. First starting out with the Marine Forest Society, where he worked on projects that experimented with efforts to restore kelp to areas off the Southern California coast.
He spent time with Friends of the Sea Lion, in Laguna Beach, as a volunteer helping to nurse injured sea lions, seals and elephant seals back to health for release back into the wild. He also has volunteered with Pacific Wildlife project. PWP works with mostly pelicans that have become injured or sick, usually due to entanglement in fishing lines and hooks.
Then in 1992 he read a 2 line add in the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society newsletter that they were looking for a photo archivist. He spent the next 7 years working on that project and getting to know Capt. Paul Watson, the founder and president. It was through this relationship that Kurt came up with the idea to start an organization that would address the needs of the So Cal marine habitat. Thus was born Ocean Defenders Alliance, (www.oceandefenders.org )whose mission is to remove abandoned fishing gear. This ghost gear kills marine life long after it is discarded.
ODA was started in 2000 with a donated boat and a lot of enthusiasm from local activists. ODA obtained official non-profit status in 2002. By 2004 they were out pulling abandoned lobster traps off the coast of Orange County. In 2007 Sea Shepherd donated a 38 foot boat to ODA. Renamed the "CLEARWATER", she now provides a much bigger and reliable vessel for removing abandoned traps and nets.
In addition to being the president and founder of ODA, Kurt is currently on the Board of Directors with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. www.seashepherd.org
