PADI Digital Underwater Photography Specialty Course by Matt Palmer

PADI Diver   It's cliche to say that a picture is worth 1000 words. Usually an underwater picture gets a single word of description, "WOW!" I became a scuba diver because I wanted to take pictures underwater and in the Digtial Underwater Photographer Specialty Course, I'll give you the tools to start you on your way to getting the amazing, evocative images you see in magazines and books.

The Digital Underwater Photography Specialty is a two-day course that will show you how to handle a digital camera in the water including prepping a housing, learning about white balance, practicing the special skills that photographers need regarding the fragile aquatic environment and how to get top-notch, beautiful pictures. We'll practice in the pool and the ocean and we'll review images throughout the course. This is an interactive and hands-on program that will have  you taking your best shots ever.

 Schedule:

Saturday Classroom and Pool:

10-1 at Eco Dive Center for Pool and Ocean Briefing. We'll review the knowledge reviews from the Digital Underwater Photography book as well as discuss the basics of digital cameras, types of cameras and underwater systems and managing digital image files. We'll also do a hands-on session of prepping a camera for underwater use.

2-5:30 at Hawthorne Pool for in-water practice. Quick camera prep review then into the pool to work on skills particular to underwater photography. We'll work on buoyancy, and avoiding damage to ecologically-sensitive areas. Using our cameras we'll practice shooting techniques that will make an immediate improvement in your images. As a group we'll review images taken in the water.

 Sunday Boat:

With cameras prepped, charged and ready to go, we'll take a boat to one of the nearby Channel Islands for a day of photography and diving. We'll put the skills and knowledge from Saturday into action in the ocean. Between dives we'll review images, talk about strategies for improvement then apply those strategies for the next dive. We'll discuss working with the conditions to set up your camera appropriately for wide-angle or macro shooting. You will see the results of this kind of interactive "show me what you've got" approach in better images.

The Digital Underwater photography course includes your training materials (book, white balance slate, etc), a boat ticket and free scuba gear rental. Students must have their own camera and housing. Accessory flash units are option, but recommended if you have one. If you don't have a camera and housing, your instructor can help you make a buying decision before beginning the class.

Scheduled Course September 26th and 27th
