Article of the Month by Jessica Bashaw - A new year brings with it new expectations and hopefully new habits. Most of us decide to lead a healthier lifestyle by eating foods that are better for us and spending more time exercising. Everyone knows the benefits of being in good health, such as improved mood, decreased body fat and increased energy level, but many people may not know how being physically fit can benefit you as a diver.

Fat diverOur flexibility increases the more we exercise and being flexible has many positives when it comes to diving, such as getting in and out of your gear, getting back on the boat and maintaining proper trim while swimming. Hip and leg flexibility can also help you with more advanced finning techniques, such as backwards kicking and helicopter turns. Flexibility can be improved by stretching after a 5-10 minute warm-up and ending your workout with stretching. Make sure to hold each stretch for 30 seconds.

The more fit you are, the less you have to work to manage your gear on the surface, swim at depth, and get back onto the boat. By reducing the amount of work needed to dive you also reduce the amount of air your body needs to fuel itself. This, in turn, reduces your air consumption and leads to longer dives (yes!). Increased cardiovascular health is achieved by maintaining a consistent cardio program for at least 3-5 hours each week. .

Dive equipment, with its cumbersome bulk, lends itself to create the exact type of stress that puts the lower back at risk. A day of picking up tanks and gear bags places a heavy strain on the connective tissues that hold your vertebrae and discs in place which is why a strong core is important. By focusing on strengthening your core (back, abdominal's and hips) you improve your balance, stability and efficiency of movement as well as reduce your chances of back injury. Check out the following for information on popular core strengthening exercises: MORE>
