PCH Scuba Site: Point Dume Pinnacles in Malibu
Point Dume "Pinnacles" in one of the best Beach Dives in Southern California and definitely a top favorite for Scuba Diving in Malibu. It's also one of the most advanced. Both of the towering Pinnacles break the surface of the water and cascade down to 50ft! Sea lions often accompany divers on their dives. It also offers some of the best visibility for diving in Malibu and a vast spectrum of Marine Life! Difficulty Level is 9.5-10/10!
Interests: The beautiful Pinnacles are covered with life; Lobster, Horn Sharks, Rockfish, Lingcod, Cabezon, Treefish, Spanish shawl, Bats Rays, Angel Sharks and Torpedo Rays. More times than not Sea lions, Dolphins, and Whales are in the area. Nearby in the sand are beautiful Sand Dollar beds.
Entry & Exits: Use prudent judgement when Beach Diving, perform an environmental assessment of the area before you gear up. Sandy beach, directly facing a south swell. Enter near the rock-climber cliffs, but don't enter to close to the rocks in the water. The Pinnacles may not be visible until you get into the water.
Suggestion-1: Charter a local Dive Boat!
Suggestions-2: Be prepared for a very long swim out and back. Beware, the Pinnacles look closer than they really are. At high tide one of the two pinnacles can be submerged. The swim can take 10-30 minutes each way; If you get to the pinnacles in less than 10 minutes that means the current is very strong. Use extreme caution and apply prudent judgement.
Best time to Dive: Low South West Swell; During quarter phase moon.
Visibility: 20 - 40ft
Warnings: Use caution and prudent judgement when diving here! Currents can be very strong here and usually run West to East but can change direction without notice! Consult the nearby Lifeguards before diving here, be sure to enquire about current conditions. Discuss the topic of bailout spots with your buddy in case you cannot return to where you started. There are coves on both sides of the pinnacles in case the current is too strong to return to the parking lot. Avoid diving when the wind is very strong due to long-shore currents. Use prudent judgement when Beach Diving, perform an environmental assessment of the area before you gear up.
Depth Recommendations: 20 - 50ft is where most of the points of interest are for this site. A nearby canyon gradually drops down to hundreds of feet deep. 60 ft is the maximum depth for this site. Use caution and prudent judgement, stay within the scope of your training.
Safety: Use of a Float, Flag, Anchor and Descent line are required for Beach Diving. Cell Phone, Oxygen Kit and First Aid Kit are always recommended.
