The Project AWARE Foundation started as a diving philosophy nearly 20 years ago: Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and Education. This philosophy has helped create divers focused on environmental conservation and trained them to advocates for the underwater world. For more than 15 years, the Foundation has existed to promote this philosophy and preserve our underwater environment. Whether through Project AWARE Diver Training programs, research conducted by scientists and volunteer divers, advocacy at an international level, or through project grants in your local diving community, the Project AWARE Foundation has been at the forefront as the leading environmental organization within the dive industry.
On Tuesday, May 6, Jenny Miller Garmendia will be coming to Eco Dive Center to share with us Project AWARE's global celebration of the Year of the Reef, as well as research being conducted in to the health of sharks, other marine life living on these reefs, and what divers are doing to save our oceans.

There are a few local dive sites that call for recreational divers to be at the top of their game. On the back side of Catalina, far from the crowds at Casino Point, there's a pinnacle that's famous among advanced divers up and down the coast. Farnsworth Bank comes into view at 65 feet below the surface and seems to drop off to the center of the earth. While there's an abundance of uncommon wildlife to be seen, the rarest gems that emerge as you descend into the clear water are the tree-like pink and purple California hydrocoral. Farnsworth is an advanced-only dive.
